Borys Kit writing for The Hollywood Reporter
James Mangold is writing and will direct a Star Wars stand-alone movie centered on Boba Fett, the feared bounty hunter and fan-favorite character, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
The reveal comes as Disney and Disney-owned Lucasfilm prepare for the release of the latest Star Wars stand-alone film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo, which opens Friday, is the second movie to be spun from the main Star Wars line — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first — but it is the first to focus on a particular character.
I'll be posting a podcast review of Solo next week, but here's a teaser; the idea of Star Wars anthology stories about characters we already know doesn't excite me. That's not to say I think they lack potential, I would just rather see new Star Wars characters and stories.
Boba Fett has never been a character that interests me, but if there's a director that could raise my eyebrows, it has to be James Mangold. Mangold directed Logan, which was a moving upheaval of superhero storytelling that also managed to be a kick ass western movie. If that same formula is applied, we might see an emotionally resonant western set in the Star Wars universe. In which case, I'm there.
All of that being said, I was very excited to see where Mangold would go after Logan, and I wanted it to be something totally original. It's a little disappointing to see he'll be doing another franchise.
